What benefits (if any) am I entitled to?

Hi,

I recently left uni and so far have not been able to find a full time job. I am applying for teacher training next year but still have a full year to go until I start if accepted.

I make £284 a month in my current weekend job and have been told there is no prospect of me getting full time or even part time work with them due to a budget embargo.

To cut a long story short I have been living with my mum but have inherited a flat so would have to pay no mortgage but I worry that I will struggle on £284 a month. As it stands, £28 of that a month comes off to pay towards council tax at my current residence.

I was just wondering what help I would be entitled to, if any?

Thanks

I think that your monthly pay from your weekend job works out at £65.53 per week - so slightly better than JSA! If you are in your own flat you can apply for the 25% single person's rebate.

So I don't think you have an entitlement - have you thought about a second job (during the week) to bring in some extra dosh?

Either that - or continue to stay with your mother and rent out your flat.

should be able to get CTB because of a low income surely?
but any money you'd save there would more than go on bills.
have you considered staying put and renting out the property?

Why not move into the house you've inherited and get a couple (or just one) of people in to share? You can earn about £4,500 in rent without paying tax as well as other people to share bills.

By doing this you'll avoid having to claim JSA and will be able to do a couple of voluntary placements in schools to enhance your PGCE application.

Hi guys - thanks for the replies.

I am in the process of applying for jobs and have been for a few months to no avail unfortunately - otherwise I wouldn't be posting lol.

I have to move into the property because the situation here isn't really ideal and I wouldn't want to be trapped into a 6 month secure tenancy agreement incase things got any worse.

I've had a bad experience with a lodger before and I also had a friend who took in a lodger and there was a severe case of overstepping the mark - it was as if they were a couple the way the guy tried to take over the house! But that may have to be an option.

I think I actually make something like £4 more than the average person would make on JSA and don't people on JSA also get exempt from CT?
