Have we bought a dodgy car?

My husband recently bought a car from a dealer. He was only given a photocopy of the logbook and a green slip.
The dealer promised to send the logbook, but so far he hasn't.
Time has come to tax the car, which we can't do without the logbook. It can't be taxed with the green slip my DH has as apparently it has been taxed with this before...suggesting the dealer never had the logbook.
He's now run a check and found the VIN number is invalid.
Does anyone know what this means? Is the car dodgy?

Ring DVLA? They will have a record of 'processed' V5 forms, or can tell you who the current owner is for a small fee I believe?:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
