Payments clearance deadline question

Hi
I do not know the proper terms for this, but I recently heard or read that one bank or possibly more, allow you a couple of hours in the morning to deposit funds to allow any payments due to be made from your account that day to clear.
My reason for posting is that for years, ever since 1st Direct started their text message balance service, I have transferred money 1st thing in the morning to cover any payments, if the message I rec/d at about 6/7am indicated I would not have sufficient funds in that particular account. These have alays been paid. This changed about a month ago and now they are automatically rejected if not enough funds.
Sorry if this is not very clear but not up on the tecnocal jargon.
Any advce appreciated. (I know, just have enough money in the account to cover payments in time!!)
Many thanks

Natwest allow up to 12.00 (It could actually even be later) to make deposits for that day if I remember correctly (not worked there for a bit so could have changed but as far as Im aware it hasnt).0

I think Lloyds TSB allow you to 3.30, however most banks now require you to have the funds in place on the previous working day.0
