Mail redirection

Not sure where else to put this so apologies if its in the wrong place!
I am moving house tomorrow and want to set up the royal mail redirection thing. Problem is if they send something to us in the mail and we have to send it back we wont be able to return it. Does anyone know if they do this? Im looking at setting it up online if possible but need to know if we have to send anything back to them. Otherwise we arent going to be able to use it. Should have done it sooner I know!
Anyone know how this works?
Thanks

You have left it way too late as they normally require at least a weeks notice. I'm not sure you can do this online the first time (only for renewing) - best bet is to do it at post office and take all the proof of ID they require.

...and ask very nicely the people moving in to forward on any mail that arrives before this kicks in?

I did this when I forgot to set up forwarding in time, I gave the new people a sheet of labels with my new address on it so all they had to do was stick a label on and repost the letter.

The website says it only takes 5 days:

How quickly can I get mail redirected? We need at least five working days to set up your Redirection. After this, we forward mail from your old address First Class within the UK, or Airmail if you’ve moved outside the UK.

I hope this is right as I'm moving in two weeks and havent done it yet :s

they will send a letter out but this will be ot the occupier
this will require them to confirm (ive never read the ltter but have delivered plenty, so assume) the redirection is legit and not someone trying ID theft
you can in the short term have your mail held at the dleivery office, you will need to go tomorrow with ID and proof of address to do this. tell them its pending a redirection and ask them to forward the mail when the redirection kicks in(unless you are happy/aboe to collect)

I would start it asap and inform the people moving in. If you don't know who is moving in put a note in the window and door to give to a neighbour. Then give the neigbour sticky lables with new address and some stamps? The old address will get a letter that tells them that mail is being redirected but its ok as long as they don't object

I figured it would be too late but its all happened so fast in the last few weeks after months of slowness and not knowing if we had the house or not. The place we are moving from is housing association so no idea who will move in next and dont really want anyone in the street to have our new address so not keen on leaving labels. I think I will just contact the important places and anything we miss.. well, we miss.
Thanks for the replies. Will know if we move again to set it up early!
