I'd look at some day trips out of Valencia sallysaver aswell, there isn't enough to do for a week in the city.

Went to Valencia in June and liked it, it is quite small but the beach is a bus ride away and the beach was nice and uncrowded. The Aquarium park was brilliant and I'd recommend it- it will take a whole day. Also the science park- we didn't go there but were told it was very good. The river bed is emptied and has been planted with lovely gardens and a great fountain that was moving in time to Chariots of Fire- lovely. Prices seemed very reasonable for eating out etc and it didn't feel overly touristy although I have heard that it is the new Barcelona.

Not been to Barcelona s can't make a comparison.

i haven't been to Valencia, so can't comment. I would say Barcelona has more for kids maybe, have you any lads? A trip to the Barcelona football ground always goes down well.

There are some lovely quaint areas of Valencia. Not a large city - easy to just walk around. From memory there was a lovely market area - handmade lace, etc., looked lovely. There is a wonderful food market as well. Absolutely fantastic - the sights and smells. Could have wandered round there for hours.

To be honest though - there is a similar one in Barcelona - just off Las Ramblas. The Gothic area of Barcelona is also very lovely, easy to get lost in though!

If you are in Barcelona over a weekend, check out the locals dancing just outside the Cathedral. I'm sure that it happens on a Saturday evening (think so anyway) and a Sunday at midday (ish). They dance the Catalan national dance, a group of rather elderly on the whole people arrive, band and dancers. Set up in the square just outside the cathedral and start to play the music and dance. They also encourage the tourists to join in.

Food is good in both cities. Tapas is a good option for the family - get loads of small dishes and share.

Probably haven't helped you decide between the two cities - but hope that it gives you some food for thought. Perhaps the answer is to save hard and go to both!
  • thanks everyone................i`ve booked barcelona
