Problem Phoning Australia

Hi Everyone,

I need to phone Australia so I used the international callchecker and first of all tried using some of the providers who charge 0.5p with 0844 access numbers. I noticed the quality of the line was bad while the phone was ringing out and I couldn't seem to get through. At first I thought perhaps the person I was trying to phone just wasn't in but at the same time I was a bit worried about the crackling and bad quality so I went to "topupdiscount" and called their premium number to get £1.50 of call credit. I then tried using that and it did sound clearer when it was ringing out but again it just rang out and then sounded like it had been picked up but I either heard nothing or a sound akin to a fax machine/modem.

After trying a number of times I decided to stop just in case they were getting the calls. I asked a friend of mine in Australia to call the number and she found out that the person I was trying to call had been in and had been answering the phone but just hearing silence at her end! I was mortified.

I have a BT line but primus for calls - could that be the issue? I just don't understand why I can't seem to get connected to Australia. I don't want to have to try using BT and pay their extortionate prices so can anyone suggest a reliable cheaper provider I could try that might work? I don't want any more silent calls so it would be good to know what the problem is.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Regards

Michelle

    No, don't try 18185, use 18185.

I've only had 2 duff overseas calls in 4½ years of using them.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi everyone,

Well I tried 18185 and it didn't work either - I'm really at the end of my tether with this! It seems like it doesn't matter what override provider I use as no matter what the phone rings at their end and they answer it and hear nothing. I'm baffled as I have been able to phone several other people in Australia just this morning with no issues at all.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would be happening with one specific number?! Clearly as it is ringing at their end the number is not wrong but, at the same time, I can't see how there can be anything wrong with my line when I can ring other numbers out there. It's baffling and I don't know who to call to try and get it sorted out.

    Regards
