Moving house, need to sort out utilities

I am currnetly with British Gas for both gas & electric. The house I'm moving into is currnetly with EON.
Is it best to stick with EON for a while till I get a feel for how much less electricity/gas I will be using in my new house (yes it will be less, it's small, newer, better insulated, and has a combi boiler so I won't have to heat up the tank daily!) or shall I ask BG to transfer over ...
I have always paid by quarterly bill - what is the advantage of monthly dd? If I am going to switch to pay monthly, I was thinking that EON may just charge me what the previous owner was paying, whilst BG would prob want to start charging me based on my currnet usage which is much higher ...

Hi LE3 - Stating the obvious, make sure you take meter readings for the old address when you move out and inform BG what they are so they can send you a final bill - When you get that bill, check that it has "Final Bill" written on it and the meter End Readings are the same as the one's you gave BG. File all this away and keep it for 6 years
On the day the new house becomes yours, (Moving in Day?), record the meter readings and give them to Eon

No matter what fancy discounted tariff the previous house owner was on, as a new customer Eon will automatically put you on the Standard Tariff which is pricey, so phone Eon and discuss what tariff options they have to get on something cheaper.
As you rightly say, the only people (apart from the last occupier), who have a billing history for the house is Eon, but, different families have different habits and your use could be half, or even double that of the previous owner

Paying by Direct Debit usually rewards you with a reasonable discount, as will taking both Gas & Elec from the same supplier, with online billing giving a bit more, but to do this you really need to know the level of the annual bills - So ask Eon for the seasonal consumption over the previous year and base your D/Debit payments on that, but bear in mind that it's all guesswork and take monthly meter readings to check if you are useing more, or less power than you are paying them for
    Good Luck

    Hi LE3,

When you first move in to a new property, you enter a deemed contract. This is where you automatically take on the current supplier, in this case E.ON.

You can start the change supplier process immediately, but this is a 4-8 week process so for that period at least E.ON will be the supplier to the property.

As Dogshome says, it’s important to provide meter readings for the new property when you move in but also for the current property when you move out.

Paying by Direct Debit opens up lots of different tariffs, so if you paid by Direct Debit you’d be sure to benefit financially. The amount of the Direct Debit in a new home can be based on previous consumption but negotiated according to your circumstances.

Just call us when you move in and have a chat, we’ll see which tariff and payment amount suits the situation best.

    Brian :)

thanks dogshome & mega-thanks to the EON rep, good to hear it from the "horse's mouth" as it were!

Usage wise, I would think I'll be pretty similar to the previous occupant - both single occupancy, working during day etc.
