Hi Tiredmum !
I have twins that are 12 Kylie and Thomas, Thomas was diagnosed with severe autism when he was three going on 4, he was also statemented for his special school, his consultant at the hospital told us with the level of his autism we could claim dla for him when he was three he got middle care and low mobility because with mobility children this age do tend to run off and do things they shouldn't as he got older things changed Thomas is 12 now and gets the high rate care and mobility because here's his list that makes him different from say his twin sister
1 He is non verbal
2 Still in nappies
3 cannot wash or dress
4 Is up most of the night
5 Doesn't understand danger
6 Wont lead a normal life or live alone
and sadly been told to leave buses and taxis because of his behavior
So things like this will be looked at mostly when assessing your sons claim for DLA
Good luck with it all:AAutism isn't the end of the world just a journey to another one:A0 -

Gather as much evidence that you can to support your application, if youv'e got copies of reports from doctors, speech and language, SENCO, bascially anyone who is involved with your son copy them and send them with your application. It's daunting filling in the form and I kept putting it off, it was only about 3 months later that I finally filled it in and included loads of information, reports etc. My son has delyaed development of 6 months, speech and language problems, behaviour issues and has a statment of needs which allows him to attend a specalist speech and language unit at mainstream primary school. We also think that he is on the lower end of the autism spectrum but are awaiting an appointment at the child development centre to discuss this.
Good luck with your application. My son gets middle rate dla and if you are successful inform the tax credits office as your child tax credit will also rise as you will be classed as having a disabled child.0 -
Hi, my son is 2 and on the autistic spectrum, i filled in the forms on line and 2 weeks later we were receiving higher rate dla, i put his paediatrician and portage worker on for reference but they never contacted them, i also receive carers allowance and we get the disability rate of tax credits too.0

I also got told that when you do the forms, you can write "my son can do this; but it leaves him tired, in pain, etc."Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
