It wasnt something I had really thought about until an electrician talked to my son and I about working with asbestos and the danger to electricians. My son says they have not covered this at college(he has been there 1 year of 3 year course) this electrician was surprised the college had not covered it yet. Can I ask when you did this on your course?

It was mentioned briefly at various stages in the the level 2, but only in the level 3 we were made aware that there are special regulations covering it, but nothing on the proper steps to take, I would have thought that any old building should be checked and if your in doubt before starting any drilling/chiseling to seek advice

Ive found some short courses that are a few days and only cost a few hundred quid.
For example the EAL VRQ level 2. This claims to allow you to be a domestic installer and get part P.
The whole thing is a minefield and theres so many different courses and providers and they all say different things.

I am a qualified electronics engineer however, so Im comfortable with electrics anyway, but it was 16th edition, so i'll need updating.

Same here 4.5 years apprenticeship, started at 89p per hour lol and had to sit in on some of these courses, beggars belief at what they get away with. Ask anyone who has been on the course about Pyro, tray work, trunking or armoured cabling and they think you are taking the mick.
Sorry very tempted to start a python type reply there i.e. 89p luxury we had to pay't mill owner 80p just to be able to work there. But dont remind me about pyro bain of my life especially when you had to make the 2 part pots in the haz areas and as for trunking and tray, not many left now who can manufacture some of the custom bends on site to standard we was used to, that cannot be tought in quick lessons.

Worst bit for me was I thought I was clever having nice sharp side cutters, it was murder for stripping though as I kept breaking the copper. (yes I learned before the new pyro strippers came out) until someone finally told me to keep a pair of old side cutters just for piro. I don't care what anybody says, piro may have been a pain but as a cable it was far better than FP200 etc and would outlast anything, I remember doing a job at the uni halls in Cambridge, we found some old imperial piro with the resin pots, we megga'd it out and it was perfect. When working as an investigation engineer for insurance companies Ive seen the stuff after major fires and being crushed flat and it still has a very good chance of passing a megga test, if there is a fire and anything is wired in pyro there is no way that can be to blame.
