Lead !
That is too expensive a metal to put in tins. Which are steel with a micron thin coating of tin (tin costs more than gold) so you know its thin
Small dents are fine, even deep one are OK. They will not sell broken of leaking tins as they are unsafe.
Goods have to be of merchantable quality, and the supermarkets don't want liability claims these days, so the tins are safe, they just look bad.
Having said this I've seen cereal boxes for sale where the bags are split, no damergours but the cereal will taste bad if left open for any lenght of time.Seth.0 -
Its is recommended that dinted tins are not purchased as there is a ‘slight’ risk that;
a)The dint may have caused the seals at the top and the bottom of the tins to rupture.
b)The dint may have been sufficient to cause a hair fracture of the metal allowing oxygen into the tin.
The two areas mentioned can lead to food poisoning bacteria entering the tin some of these bacteria have the potential to cause death Clostridium botulinum for one.
Blown tins i.e. tins, which have expanded on the top or bottom, are also a slight risk, as a blown tin suggests that bacteria have multiplied within the tin. As bacteria multiply they produce oxygen, hence the expansion of the tin. And for those of you that are interested- This is how the world became oxygenated in the first place!
Lead is no longer used in the food manufacturing industry, for canning or otherwise.
