I've recenttly rediscovered a chimney and it seems reusable. I'd like to put in a proper real coal fire but I don't know where to get one from. The local fireplace shops only seem to do gas/electric fireplaces. Anyone able to recommend a good place to get a new fireplace from. Also what do I actually need to reinstate a coal fire? I'm not even sure of the correct terms for the parts. The chimney seems to consist of just normal house bricks, I thought that they'd have to be some sort of fireproof lining? The problem is, I haven't got access to a real fire to compare.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Trying hard to be a good moneysaver.

You want a fire without the gas insert. I've gone for a full cast iron job, the same as a traditional looking gas fire, just no fiddly bits.

It's much easier than you think - find yourself a nice independent fire showroom that will cut you a bit of a deal and ask for their advice!

I have one is a replica Victorian fireplace and lovely that it is coal fire is useless as a source of heat it really is. I got a log burner too far better. I want to get rid of coal fire and pout a gas fire as a insert but dont want my floor ripped up for pipe as I got a expensive laminate flooring
  • We bought our fireplace from fireplacestoreonline, and found them to be the cheapest and they were very helpful.

    hope this helps.

Once you know what you are looking for I would check out a site like gumtree or a salvage yard. I have seen people selling fireplaces on gumtree for a fraction of the cost. I have been looking myself and ones that cost £975.00 from fireplace companies are going for as little as £100 on gumtree from people who have pulled them out and want rid.

When we moved in, our house already had a fireplace like this (think it had been imported from America in the 70s/80s). It's a fab idea. They make the fire easy to light. You can fold the doors right open so you have an open fire and close them when you leave the room. Also they are less draughty. I can't speak about the company I've given a link to - it's just to give you an idea of what they look like.
  • If the chimney is just old brick and the house is old you may need the chimney re lining, this can be pricey!! We had some quotes but in the end bought our own liner from Direct Flues of Nottingham and got our local builder to fit it...much cheaper. You can find them through search engines and the service was great.
