Lizi, the smell's in the lid not the glass so you can either get new lids or coat the inside of the lids.

Wow, that looks so good! I went on your homepage to read about it and found I couldn't stop myself looking at all the other fantastic things you've made. It's now nearly 10am and I'm still in my pjs! I blame you and your great homepage :D

A small Thank You can make a BIG difference ;)
  • Thank you to everyone for their wonderful ideas on this thread, I shall definately be trying some of these for christmas. Really want to have a go at making some sort of chutney, and maybe a lemon curd/jam or something like that. Just one question, how far before christmas can I make these sort of gifts? Would it be ok to make it in the next couple of weeks or is that too far in advance? Also has anyone tried printing their own lables and if so what sort of glue do you use to get them to stick to the glass? I know I could just buy sheets of sticky paper but dont really want the expense of that. Thanks in advance

twinklelittlestar I printed off my own labels last year, on normal paper, cut them out and used pritstick to stick them on! They stayed on fine!

Well Sunday I was making chutney too! Did green tomato and runner bean (basically adjusted the Nigella green tomato recipe) and it tasted fab when cooking! Will look forward to trying it properly in a few weeks. Probably won't use them for gifts though - bit obscure flavour really - but had to do something with the green tomatoes from my parents garden because they were being attacked with blight! Still got raspberry jam, chilli jam and sweet onion chutney to make for gifts though.

Going to be making some apple pies this weekend too. FOund a local small farm who sell cooking apples at £1 for 2kg, so bought £4!! That's mine and my mum's job when I go visiting her next Sunday!! lol They freeze great.

To find someone's homepage you click on their name and then on contact info. If they have linked their page it will come up there.

    Hi Clare,

Can I ask where abouts you found the cooking apples? I see you're in South Wales too and wondered if it could be close by and worth a visit. Thanks.

Also, what are the best apples to make chutney with?
