NPower have sent a cheque to my flat

Hello, I have just recently brought a the flat, and it is unoccupited at this moment, and their is no gas and eletric else.
But a cheque send to my flat this morning from Npower for £80.00.

I did receive a previous letter said that it is the compensation for no gas supply for a few hours else.

however the name on the cheque is payable to Paradfin Housing.
It does not seem a real name on it.

Anyone know what should I do?

Could be a cheque for the previous tennant or owner, who did you buy the flat from? Perhaps a housing association owned it? Without the correct spelling its difficult to tell (Paradfin Housing does not come up on google as a company) Is it definatley your address (if its a flat then it may have easily been misposted.)

You certainly can not cash it, as the cheque is not or you. Its for whoever had the interupted gas supply. Failing all else, call Npower and tell them, they were the senders of the cheque, and probably your current providers at the moment too, if you have just moved in.

    Hi aihoohoo

The best thing to do is call npower on 08451 201 453 and let them know you've received the cheque. As lindos90 says, it might be for a previous tenant, housing association or even for a neighbour.

You'll also need to check who your supplier is in your flat as it may be npower.

    Kind regards,

Who was it addressed to on the envelope? Surely that would help you, and usually there would be an account number on the letter so that when you call them they will be able to refer to the correct account from it, and hopefully redirect?

Isn't it illegal to open post addressed to somebody else?

That old chestnut. No it is not illegal, unless it can be shown to have been done to cause detriment to the addressee.

Calm down, it was just a query, as that's the excuse npower threw at me when I complained to them that they were threatening to cut the power off as the previous tenant's bill was unpaid when they left!

I knew that. Npower didn't seem to. Told me it was my responsibility to find out their new address.
It took a while, but I got it sorted in the end - couple of yrs ago now. BUt the main thing was that they told me I had acted illegally by opening the previous tenant's mail which was emblazened with "your electricity supply will be cut off"... haha
