Foreign cheque HSBC, bad exchange rate

I paid a cheque for $1000 USD into my bank account at the beginning of June. They said it would cost £12 and take up to six weeks. The cheque has now gone in, but they have only deposited ~£580.
Is this right?
How can I find out what exchange rate they have used?
Because it should really be no less than ~£650 at any point during this month.
Any advice?

This should have shown the exchange rate and charges deducted.
Are you using the selling. buying or mid-rate for your assumption?0
