travel money error

i recently went to a foreign exchange beaurea to change back my dollars and travellers cheques. they told me the amount i was entitled too, and gave me the money. They have now said they have made an error, and i owe them £340 as they worked it out wrong, and gave me too much. i just handed the money and vouchers and they processed the transaction. what rights do i have on this, and do i have to give the money back, as i gave them the money, and i didnt check how much i gave them, do i need to give it them back, as i have no proof of what i gave them, and they never gave me a receipt, do i believe that they have done an error. can anyone advise me on this, as i am reluctant to give them the money back,
thanks

Do people have no morals anymore? You do realise someone will lose their job over your reluctance?
What exchange rate did they give you?Gone ... or have I?0 -
I'm sure if it had been the other way we would have had " they must have to pay me what they should have done" type of thread

I get what you are saying DMG but what happened to "please check your change before leaving the shop as mistakes cannot be rectified later"?
If the shoe was on the other foot, however much the OP would protest, they would have problems trying to get their money back especially as this was a cash transaction and comes down to OP's word against the shop. Maybe the till didn't tally at the end of the day, but who is to say which transaction was incorrect?
I'm not saying the OP should keep the money, just that more info is needed before the OP parts with more cash.
It's only a game

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
And I know if I was changing money I would know exactly how much currency I was changing and how much I was expecting back.
How much currency would you be changing to be 'mistakenly' given £340 too much?
Bit of trollism here, maybe?0 -
As far as I am aware, If they made a mistake, check the exchange rate of the day and the amount you got etc. If it is off by around £340 than the money is theirs, as you haven't relied on the money, and you have been made aware of the mistake, its theft if as soon as you realise the mistake, do not take reasonable steps to return the money to the lawful owner.
The situation gets cloudy with no receipt and you apparent lack of knowledge of the amount of money you exchanged. Ask them for all the proof they have of the mistake, and decide if you believe them.0 -
I sense a troll hmmm0

And here i thought they would be losing their job over a mistake they made. Anyway, if they will lose their job because of it (and not just a warning/action plan), then chances are they will lose their job regardless whether the money is kept or not.
Remember that thing about once a offer has been made and accepted it forms a legally binding contract of sale? Its not like with a bank where there is no exchange of goods for payment taking place and therefore, you can end up owing the money if you spend it.
While i am too honest for my own good and have even pointed out when i was charged 20p less than i should have been for a membership subscription, if the OP genuinely didnt realise at time of transaction, i dont see what the problem is.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
I cannot understand how they knew your address to contact you, as you say you simply handed them the dollars n travelers cheques and they simply handed you the money. Unless they asked you before you left the beaurea.
Tell them you have spent it all, unless they can categorically prove you owe them, let them take you to court for it.
As for the ridiculous notion that someone will lose there job over it, maybe if someone can make such drastic mistakes like this, they shouldn't be working there, how much more money should they pour out in errors before they are sacked for it?
Its certainly not your fault they slipped up, see it as a bonus up until they fork out even more money to try n claim it back through a court.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
