I think my laptop is dying... :(

It gets extremely hot underneath, and I blew in the fan part today, a whole lot of dust came out and now it's making a 'whirring' noise...

It is very slow at times, and the sound will often go and I can't watch YouTube or play music.

Previously when laptops have been going down the death route I just buy a new one, but with discovering MSE and generally not having the funds, I wondered what I could do to help it back on it's feet.

I don't think I have the original discs for Windows etc, and it went in for a repair ages ago to a computer place and I think he put a newer version on anyway, which I don't have.

It's an HP Pavilion dv2000.

Anyone have any idea?

The whirrling is more than likely dust stuck in the fan. Just blow a few more times....

You can get laptop coolers if you want.

    e.g.

If it's spent a lot of time sitting on a sofa or bedspread or suchlike, it might be worth you cracking it open to give it a decent de-dusting. "How-to" here.

No harm to ensure you have your data backed up anyway, so do that first, but you can do a logical cleanup without needing to reinstall the operating system. Start with the pinned threads on virus checking. And cccleaner might help you get rid of some unwanted rubbish, too.

    Thanks

I might take a look at the guide.

I'm so not great at things like cleanups and the like - everything is backed up though, I just know that I don't have the original operating system running on it I don't think. Where could I get cccleaner?

    Hi

System mechanic is also very good I have used it safely for about 5 years. Download a 30 day trial, just let it analyze and automatically repair problems. It wont help with the dust though

  • Get a can of compressed air (comes with a straw attachment) from staples or a big Tesco & blow it into the vents.

Its a lump of dust stuck...

    CCleaner

Don't forget to do the customary scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan. At the end of the scan, 'Remove Selected', reboot and post the 'Log' (will be under the 'Logs' tab in the program) here.
