posting on behalf of a freind,
who was declared bankrupt feb 2010 he has applied to rent a furnished flat and was asked for a garantor and a bond because of the bankrupcy which he supplied
However today the letting agent moved the goalpost and say the garantor must pay the rent
1 is this normal for a bankrupty?
2 or his he being discrimanated ? and can the letting agent do this?
i dont know myself and he is very down at the moment so any advice would be great

each agent and landlord makes their own choices and rules as to which tenants they will / will not accept.. I have previously considered asking a guarantor to pay the rent, but, found another way round it in the end.
Your friend must realise that being bankrupt means that folks will view his vudgeting skills as next to zero - whether this is true or not
is there any reason why your friend cannot pay the guarantor and the guarantor pay the rent ?
After all.. the guarantor must be someone very well known to your friend and if they are not willing to do this.. why should he expect a total stranger to trust him after bankruptcy....0 -
the guarantor paying the rent was not mentioned until now he feels like the letting agents are moving the goal posts to stop him getting the flat hence he feels hes being discrimanated against
he could get the guarantor to pay (its me) and i dont mind payiing it then him paying me him but he keeps things close to his chest and thinks because he got himself in a mess he has to sort it out0 -
""he feels like the letting agents are moving the goal posts to stop him getting the flat""
this is his depression talking.... if the agent / landlord did not want him to have the flat they would just say no....0 -

Hi
Can i sugest you ask a slightly different question? Sadly most folks here would refuse to act as a guarantor. If you friend refuses to move out at the end of the tenancy, you have to pay the rent. if he moves and and leaves before the end of the tenancy, you have to pay the rent.
Much better to try and find a landlord who does not do financial checks and get a coue of months rent up front. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Get yourself named on the tenancy. If you are going to guarantee, you also need the right to give notice on the tenancy.the guarantor paying the rent was not mentioned until now he feels like the letting agents are moving the goal posts to stop him getting the flat hence he feels hes being discrimanated against
