Urgent: British gas removing meter as they think someone tried to temper with it
Hi,
I need some urgent advise on how to stop British gas from removing our meter and charging us money to put it back later on.
Basically a guy came this morning to get the reading and later on came back with another person and said that there is an extra wire coming out of the meter and he thinks that we have tempered the meter so they will have to take it off and they won't put it back on unless we pay £650 and an estimated amount to cover the stolen electricity since from GOD knows how long.
I rang the landlady and she called up her engineer which found out that the wire wasn't even connected to the meter but British gas are saying that they will still take the meter off as we have tried to temper with it and the bill payer would have to pay the money to get it back on.
I have been living in the house for about 2 years, the meter is a prepaid meter and obviously we pay for the electricity before we have even used it so technically we have cleared all our bills since we moved in.
I would really appreciate any help or advice anyone has to offer.
Thanks

The will be being done by Revenue Protection. The meter will be removed and taken away as evidence. If they have any reason to suspect a meter has been tampered with that is standard practice. What happens next will depend on what they find.
As an example they had a case of someone who always had their caravan parked blocking the meter box. In the end they came round, crawled under the caravan to open and box and found he had put in another meter so the original meter was not recording his useage. He was given a £10,000 bill on the spot (he did have a heated pool) which he paid.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
