Sandals - Discounted and then broke!

I bought the last pair of sandals in New Look, they had a couple of beads missing so I received 10% but was told they would be 'non-returnable' - I agreed as there was also a 20% deal running, so I got the shoes for £12.96 instead of £18!
I wore the sandals that night and on my way home the strap split down the middle, meaning the shoes were completely broken.
I took them back to NL the very next morning and expecting a bit of an argument because of the 'Non-Returnable' issue. The manager said he couldn't give me a refund even though he agreed they were faulty for a different reascon - but as I'd already bought them at a 'faulty discount' he could only offer an exchange.
He did agree to exchange them, but there were no more in my size, so I bought exactly the same pair, in a smaller size (thinking i could squeeze into them!! - i do really like them!).
When I paid for the new shoes, I paid back the £1.36 discount that I'd received for the original pair, effectively now purchasing a brand new pair minus the 20% deal on all shoes - except the shop assistant has still scrawled NR in black marker over the receipt for the brand new pair!! - I just think this is wrong - hindsight is a great thing, but if I'd know they were to break, I'd never have accepted the 10% discount - it just wsn't worth it as now i can't get my money back on these either!

What are my rights if I buy an item which I know to be damaged?
If an item is reduced in price due to a sale, your rights are the same as if it were a full priced item. If however, the item is reduced due to a defect and you are made aware of that defect, you cannot then return the item on the basis of that defect. Sounds obvious, but in many cases, the shop assistant will tell you that you cannot bring the item back at all – which is misleading. What if you buy a shirt at reduced price because of a missing button. However when you get home you discover a huge hole in the seam which you were not informed of. You know you cannot return the item due to the missing button, but you are free to return it on the basis of the dodgy seam. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
