1999/v reg Mondeo 2.0 petrol Zetec 5dr hatchback, 90k on the clock, 6 months MOT & Tax.

Needs a new rear bumper as the existing one has a big chunk broken out of it.

Thinking of Part-exing it, but so far only been offerred £150 against a £4k runabout for the Missus.

Do you think I could sell it privately with the smashed bumper?
How much would it cost to replace the bumper and would I make up the cost of repairing it if I was to then sell it?

Any other suggestions?

I guess what I am really asking is it worth having the bumper repaired?
If it costs £150 for a new bumper, would I get that back from a private sale?

Bumper repair is out - it'd need replacing. £30 or so from a scrappie plus fitting - there's enough of them in scrappies to be able to find one the right colour.

Mondeo petrols are pretty unwanted things. I'd just take the dealers offer of 150. They'll just bin it off into the trade/auction and get their money back.

Back in 2007 i had a '95 mondeo 1.8TD with 125k on the clock. Scrap value at a local metal merchant was £100. After a bit of struggle got rid of it for £250. That is due to it being a diesel. Mechanically it was sound but body wise had plenty of scratches and small parking dents.

As a petrol you will be offered less. Waste of money to repair the bumper.

Sell the car as it is and say the price reflects the damage to the bumper. The new owner may just want a runabout and may be happy as it is. If ypu replace the bumper you have to either raise the price or accept the loss you will make.

Other choice is to visit the local metal merchant and scrap yard and see what they offer or just trade it in for peace of mind. Less hassle that way
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

6 months tax is £100 ish, you'd get another £100+ if you delivered it to your local friendly scrap yard.

I'd be tempted to stick it on ebay with a full description and the option to take the tax on top of the bid price

is similar to yours and seems to have changed hands for north of £500

Bumpers on Mondeos of this age are notoriously prone to cracking and breakage due, I believe, to the inadequate way in which they are mounted. I would be quite surprised to find a decent one in a scrapyard.
  • Depending on how big the damage is, lots of gaffer tape.. that's what I've done..

Also recently sold my mondeo on ebay as spares or repairs... got over 250 quid for it.

To be honest, no idea where you are.. but for 150 quid I'd be tempted to take it off your hands..

Well I spent the weekend cleaning the car and to be honest it came up looking pretty good. I put some gaffer tape over the split in the rear bumpr and that even imprvoed it's appearance. I then stuck it out the front of the house with a couple of for sale signs on it and chanced my arm by asking £650 for it (it does have 6 months tax & MOT).

Anyway I sold it last night for £580, so I am chuffed to bits with that :j:beer::j
