Recommendations for a good mattress

Not really a moneysaving tip, more of a recommendation really. After a new kingsize mattress - went into MFI and Dreams yesterday and the choice was overwhelming. Just wondering if anyone has any good recommendations. Would prefer pretty firm mattress if possible. Do remember thinking a IKEA mattress was good in a B&B a couple of years ago, but not sure what people think of these..

Theres lots of manfacturers out there and don't just stick to the big brand names. I would recommend an orthopedic mattress for everyone. Unless you really like them stay clear of memory foam ones too.
I recently got a king size 4 draw divan with a great 'stressfree' ortho mattress from a company called High Grove. The bed and mattress was only £350.
Good luck and hope this helps.

if its only a mattress you are after i would recommend a compnay called mattress man. they also sell mattresses from previous seasons - still new and sealed but much cheaper.
in terms of which mattress i think you cant go wrong with a slumberland. the gold seal deluxe being amazing (i would be quite happy to stay in bed all day)
i've recently bought a spare room double mattress called coral, which is medium firm and very comfy too.
ikea mattresses are different sizes to standard uk beds so you would have to replace the frame/divan too.
best thing to do is go and lay on them all...0 -
Relaxsan do an orthopaedic mattress, but be warned, it is very firm.
I went for a Kingsize water latex matress and find it extremely comfortable
I ordered from a company called Branbury. Here's a link to the one I bought:

Very good service, they arranged in advance a time for delivery plus it was free0 -
My last mattress was a Hypnos, and is still going strong. Just beginning to lose its padding a bit now, so will have to replace in the near future, but it is nearly 14 years old and is still very supportive.0

A few things to bear in mind
1) Don't ever buy a mattress without trying it out.
2) When you do try a mattress out, lie down on it in your normal sleeping position, and give yourself a few minutes (or as long as you want) to get the 'feel' of it.
3) Remember that a firm mattress doesn't mean a supportive mattress.
4) Not sure if you have a bedstead, sprung-edge or firm-top divan. If the divan base is sprung-egde then you need to replace it as well.
5) If the divan base is slatted, then do not put a pocket-sprung mattress on there, as the base will not provide adequate support for it.0 -
I recently bought an 80KG density memory foam mattress topper (3 inch deep) from e-bay. I went for the 80kg one as I didn't want to sink too far into it (as with the lower density ones). I have to say it's fantastic, I've had a bad back for years, and while it's still not perfect, it's much better than it was. I used to have to get up as soon as I woke up through back pain, now I can lie in for a bit... bliss.
Just in case someone says that it must be a rubbish original mattress to make my back worse, it is an expensive pocket sprung one.
I'd reccomend a high density memory foam mattress to anyone with back pain.
