When can I do paid work for my old employer?

My employer has just made me dedundant. I know there are several important deadlines that they must be meet. I've offered to do this work but they are saying I must wait 6 months. It will be too late then for both of us. I know this is a tax issue to show that my job was really redundant and the tax free payment was genuine. Can I work a few hours a week for my old employer to meet these deadlines? A few hours is not the same as a whole job. Is there a clear legal limit?
