Norton - Whats the Point

Options
I have Norton 2010 on the PC so how does my PC still get infected with a virus?

The virus keeps telling me to scan as l have virus's, wont let you open any program etc. Pop also comes up mentioning problem with 'logonui.exe'

I have system restored and now running Malware.

I do feel l am wasting money with Norton, l just don't expect to be getting virus when l have protection

No virus scanner is foolproof, there are too many viruses about.

Try avast if you want a free one, and use the money saved to backup using disk imaging to a usb drive.

Make sure you update and do a full scan with malwarebytes, and let it clear up anything found

Using Norton for virus protection is like using a sieve to carry water...

Norton has a very poor reputation when it comes to being effective against viruses (was recently in 'don't touch with a barge pole' territory but rumor has it its slowly getting better)

For now there are several very good free anti virus programs around that perform MUCH bettter than norton in independant tests (av-comparatives.org, not the thinly veiled advertorials you get PC mags).

I'd suggest uninstalling norton, then use the norton removal tool to make sure its completly gone and get the free version of either:

    Avira
    Avast
    Microsoft Security Essentials

Note you are looking for the 'free forever for home use' version not the 30 day 'trial' of the paid for with all the bells and whistles version

    (personally I use the latter)

Other important measures to keep viruses at bay

-Make sure your computer is set to automatically download and install important security patches from microsoft
-make sure you are using an up to date browser, alot of people recommend getting something other than IE, if you happen to be on firefox and are particularly paranoid you can get the 'no script' pluginbut depending on whether you do visit 'dodgy' sites often that may be more hassle than its worth (personally I don;t have it but tend to stick to mainstream/legal sites these days)

After changing from years of use with AVG to Avast after recommendations here (and the av-comparatives site) I thought I'd found the 'one' but after a while Avast gets really annoying with its silly "I've done this/that" pop-ups that appear far too frequently, and I also don't like its overzealous thing of blocking sites that it thinks are unsafe even though I know that they're perfectly fine. Took far too much fiddling about to disable it and then it gives you a whole bunch more annoying pop-ups telling you how unprotected you are.

Have now ditched that and replaced it with MSE instead and although I have no desire to add extra Bill Gates stuff to my machines, I have to say that it doesn't give me any hassle at all and just gets on with its duties quietly in the background. It's also the highest ranking free AV on the av-comparatives site too so it doesn't get any better than that! Well done MS :T .

Nothing is 100% secure and everyone has a favourite, I'm unashamedly in the MSE camp, so my vote is Microsoft Security Essentials

Nothing is 100% secure (And I seriously doubt anything ever will be)

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

Of the free one's tested in the last av comparatives on demand test, Avast beat MSE and AVG in terms of speed and detection rates, it's also much lighter on resources.

    avast free 97.3 fast
    mse 96.3 very slow
    avg 94.2 average

    norton 98.6 fast

The only time I've seen an Avast rogue website detection, was when someone here posted a link to a site, which happened to host a previously unknown to all AV's trojan which had infected their system, so if you are getting lots of site warnings, maybe you are being warned with good reason, or roam around dubious sites a lot. It's one tick box to turn off web detection and one tick box to turn off update popups if you don't like them.

As others said, nothing is 100%. Even with an installed anti virus you should use your common sense and not click on everything.
