Shimano do twisty gear change components in the Alfine range which certainly are not crap by any stretch of the imagination. Some people prefer them over the alternatives.
That bike doesnt look worth over 300 thats for sure.0 -
The Carerra Subway has twist grip shifters (sram). I've found them very reliable and never once gone wrong in 5 years, unlike other bikes I have with trigger shifters which seem to jam every now and again.Out on blue six..
It's Chips and Jackets, Peas and Trousers.0 -
Sram twist grip are well regarded in cross country racing. They're slightly lighter and the 1:1 actuation makes them just as reliable as the triggers but the sealed mechanism means less maintainence.0

It's a reebok bike, of course it's garbage. Fit only for shipment back to china for recycling. Buy a Carrera Subway or similar.0

It is most likely to be just a badge engineered product. However at £170 it might be ok for the money. I only paid £160 for my bike and although the bottom bracket failed after 50 miles which was covered under warranty I have done 200 miles in it now and its been fine.
I have seen far worse than this Reebock. At least it dosn't have full suspension and disc brakes like a lot of bikes at this price range do!
It looks like a very basic heavy bike but might actually be well buiit.0 -
I'd be getting on ebay and looking at good brand bikes, you'll get soooo much more for your money with a second hand bike.
Look at Trek, Kona, giant.
If you want brand new then go to your local bike shop and look at the Giants as they're good value for money. Specialized are good too.Trying to spread calmness, understanding and optimism on MSE0 -
Just been into Halfords to take a look at this bike. Firstly there were none on show and then when I did ask, the guy at the counter VERY relucatantly offerred to get one out of the wharehouse for me to look at, but it would be boxed and he didn't have the time to put it together, let alone allow me to have a test ride.
Anyway I had a quick look (this was all that was possible as he wasn't even willing to remove the packaging!). First thing I noticed is that it has the twist grip handlebar type of gear change which I know to be crap. So it was a quick decision not to buy it.
Heaven only know what would have happened if I had liked it as there was no way I would buy a bike without at least trying it and it was obvious from the Halfords guy that there was no way he was going to go to the bother of putting it together.
Big question I have to ask is why are Halfords spending a fortune advertising these bikes nationally (the Sky News site has the advert at the top of their page this morning) and then fidning that the store don't even have one on display.
PS. This was the big halfords in Farnborough where they have the entire first floor dedicated to bikes, so they have plenty of room.
Thanks for all the advice above, I think I will be stearing well clear of Halfords bikes from now on.
It would probably take him 15-30 mins to put that together, in which time he should probably be doing something else.Of course you aren't going to buy without seeing one put up, but you have to be reasonable. They aren't a bike specialist, or anything specialist really so its not like the staff can knock one up in 5 minutes.
If you really want to see one then you could ask a manager to arrange to have one assembled and then go back later after they have had time to put it together.0
