freezing water in plastic bottles

Options
Hello all

Some words of wisdom please. My granddaughter sometimes puts a used plastic drink bottle which she has re-filled with flavoured water (squash of some kind) into the freezer so she can have a really cool drink with her when she goes to school.

A know-it-all friend has told her she can get cancer from the plastic bottle by doing this. She says it is because it has been frozen.

I always tell my grandchildren to try to get the source of the information when things like this crop up as there are so many scare stories flying about. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this frozen plastic bottle story.

I should imagine there is a carcinogen in nearly every plastic bottle & no doubt most plastic bottles will degrade quicker in extreme heat & cold.

Personally I would of thought there is some truth in this rumour.

I did hear it sometime ago.

Never checked it out but it makes sense to me.

    Just found this though http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/plasticbottles.asp
Another common type of plastic bottle is made with bisphenol A, also known as BPA. These products are typically rigid plastic bottles intended for multiple re-use, such as baby bottles or water bottles carried by cyclists. Concerns about tests that may link BPA ingestion with cancer and reproductive damage in some animals and the possibility that BPA could leach out of plastic bottles and into the liquids they contain has led to bans in some areas on the use of BPA in plastic products intended for children (such as baby bottles), and has prompted some consumers to seek out non-BPA alternatives.

Can freezing a PET beverage bottle cause dioxins to leach into its contents?
This is the subject of another e-mail hoax. There simply is no scientific basis to support the claim that PET bottles will release dioxin when frozen. Dioxins are a family of chemical compounds that are produced by combustion at extremely high temperatures. They can only be formed at temperatures well above 700 degrees Fahrenheit; they cannot be formed at room temperature or in freezing temperatures. Moreover, there is no reasonable scientific basis for expecting dioxins to be present in plastic food or beverage containers in the first place.

If you avoid everything which someone, somewhere has said causes cancer you will lead an under nourished, unfulfilling life.

I used to do this as a kid, never did me any harm.

I think there probably is a chance, but it would probably be a very small chance.

There are special plastic bottles you can get specifically for freezing liquids, they are the type of hard plastic like tupperware. They are more resiliant that the juice bottles I think your granddaughter is using.

Don't you find that the Vodka is excessively diluted with this recipe? I favour just a drop or two of water with my Malt Whisky.
