Injured dew claw

Do i need to take my dog to the vet for this?
The majority is still attached but she squealed when she did it (yesterday) and started limping, she's been fine today apart from licking it.

We took our other dog when he did it but mainly because there was so much blood from it and his was only just hanging on, not a pretty sight at all.

Is there anything I could do myself? Or would a dog groomers do anything for her?

The vets is 20 minutes drive away, and in this heat it won't be very pleasant for her. The groomers is a 10 minute walk.

Wrap a bandage around the paw and put a sock over it until a vet can see him/her tomorrow to stop him/her from nibbling at it. Don't worry too much. Our old GSD ripped his dew claw and he was fine after it was bandaged up for a while. You can get antiseptic cream to put on it from the pet shop until you can get him/her to a vet but please do take him/her to the vet no matter what advise you get on here.

My dog is only a little jack, a babies sock would be too big for her!!

She's been swimming in the river today so I think its a bit late to be putting anything on it. Did put some savlon spray on it earlier and gave it a little soak. None of the skin underneath is exposed anyway so its not a bad one.

Just in case you didn't know, any antiseptic cream is fine to use, it doesn't have to be a special dogs one or anything. They're all the same.

Are you sure? I didn't know that.

Yeah, I'm sure. My dog had really bad skin allergies and was always getting sores so the vet said to use any antiseptic.

The only trouble is if she knocks it then you could have blood everywhere! These claws are terrible for bleeding!

If it was loose then I would say take her to the vet (who would probably want to remove it) but if it is still mostly attached then bandaging it might help.

I had to do that with one of my greyhounds ... if anything happened, it happened to him and, being such a big baby, you would go towards him with a bandage in your hand and he would scream the house down before you even touched him because he would know you were going to do something!!

The only trouble is with your little dog having been swimming in the river ... she might have some infection in there, so if you do bandage it, I would remove the bandage every day to check that it is healing ok and that there isn't any infection!

Obviously though, any worries and I'd be onto the vet just to have it looked at.

She caught it again this morning so i'm going to take her today hopefully. Blood all over a cream carpet isn't a good look!

Better get some ear plugs before I go, she is going to squeal.

    Hope everything is ok.
My German shephard tore her claw on Friday. Was bleeding and half hanging off, (top tip for bleeding claws, dip in bicarb of soda, advised by vet) made an appointment at the vet but by the time she got there she had delt with it herself and the vet said to leave it to heal on it's own just keep a check that it stays reasonably clean and no sign of infection.
