Debit card Earmarking confusion

I have stuck my o2 money card on Itunes with 3 x £1.58 earmarked!!!
Also I have tried my Electron card with o2 money a few times and have 4x 1p and a £150 earmarking (and failed as over £100 and confusion about counting a space as a character on verified by Visa)
Genuine purchase Earmarking often just goes to full account debit within 1-2 days - what stops a payment and returns to me after a period of say 7 days??

I am asking - what is the difference between say spending £10 on your debit card, the payment being earmarked and then being debited from your account 1-2 days later??AND
How does your bank know to return an earmarking to you?? I have 8 outstanding earmarkings £1.58 x 3, £1p x 3 and £150!! My bank says they have been authorised and they can't do anything!!!0 -
authorizations will automatically drop back in after a set period of time, but if they are legitimate transactions they can still go.100% G33K

If a transaction hasn't been completed by the retailer within a certain period (which varies between card issuers) it "falls off" your account and that balance becomes available to you again.0

but the retailer still has the right to request another auth and take the funds, so they can still come out.100% G33K:D:D:D:D

The £1.58 x 3 or pennies are no worries BUT when my avail balance dropped by £150 I was worried!!!
£150 is a lot of dosh to be caught up in the systems.
Does a merchant have to so something to follow on from an authorization to get his money??? I've had trouble with getting double inputed identical transactions before and the money didn't come back on its own!!0 -

Yes, if the retailer claims the transaction because they have provided you with the goods or service, it will use the authorisation code for that transaction to debit the funds. As other posters have stated, if they have made several authorisations in error, these shouldn't be taken as long as the retailer doesn't present the auth code.Best Regards

Did you spend the £150 with someone, if so calm down. If you didn't, wait a few days and come back to us.0 -
I had the intention of putting £150 on my o2 money card, it was authorised hence the ear-marking.
But because there is a limit of £100 per day per card deposit it was never deposited on my o2 card. You would have thought it would have realised before it sought authorisation?
I am not crying into my pillow, just wanted to know the earmarking and debit or re-credit works.0
