When can a kitten go out?

I know new older cats are suppose to stay indoors for at least 6 - 8 weeks before being let out but I have a nine week old kitten, at what age would she be allowed out? Does 6 months sound to long or about right?
Thanks

Hiya,
6 months sounds good to me. They are supposed to be kept in until they have had their jabs, and then after that its down to their size, how savvy they are and if you have main roads etc i guess. Our latest kitten went out at 6 months because shes tiny and just didnt look like she would be safe out yet, but our others probably went out a bit before that as they seemed to grow faster. We always take them out in the garden with us for a few weeks first, rather than just chuck them out! Good luck x0 -
I'd say after they have been Spayed or Neutured.0

Oops yes forgot to mention that, duh!..ours were all spayed by then too!0

You should keep her inside until she's been neutered.

Definitely keep them in until they're neutered
My mum has always had hers done at 6 months and the outdoor cats were allowed out once they'd healed up

mine was done at 3 months and out on her own once she had her 2 week check at the vet- prior to that i used to take her round the back garden on a lead so she would know what was what and she was fine :-)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. Thanks for all the replies.

I am not 100% sure yet as to whether to get her neutered or let her have 1 litter then get it done, I have heard bad things about females getting neutered before at least 1 litter. She is still very young at the moment so i still have time to decide what to do
