Sharpening shears

My garden shears urgently need sharpening. In our previous house someone used to come round door-to-door once a year and offer this kind of thing but I haven't seen any ads for people who sharpen garden tools where we now live. Do garden centres offer this kind of thing? I'm not sure who to ask or where to get it done as cheaply as possible.

Thanks

My local shoe repair place does it for £2, better than new, whilst there they also did hubby's chisel for free :)

Thanks for that. There's a shoe menders near us that I could try - I hadn't thought about them - and as a small business in a related kind of field if they can't do it they might know someone who could. £2 is what the door-to-door guy charged.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Broomstick but does anyone know how to sharpen secateurs (sp?) ??

I have two pairs, both of which have seen better days but am loath to buy another pair when I'm sure they could be easily brought up to scratch.

    Thanks in advance :)

I have a small sharpening stone which I use for mine, scissors and my hoe too.
Got it from wicks I think a few years, dont remember how much but knowing me it would have been only a few pounds.
You run the stone over the blade not the other way round, 2 or 3 times and I do that twice a year.
Doesn't get the shears sharp though, or big loppers, only little things.

Just had a quick look and it's a fiver now.

Most ironmongers will know who in the area offers sharpening. (I mean the old-fashioned kind that sell nuts, bolts and creosote, not the D-I-Y sheds)

How about people who service lawn mowers? They might be able to sharpen shears too.

Thanks for all the ideas and the thread hijacking! I hadn't got as far as thinking about secateurs but they'll need doing soon enough too.
