Car insurance gaff

I've just found out that I have been driving around uninsured for a whole year!!
My car tax renewal arrived a couple of weeks ago and when I logged on the tax website on Thursday to renew, it said it couldn't find my insurance record. Thought this was odd, so the next morning spent ages hunting it down at home, only to find that I don't have any insurance.
When it came to renew last year I collected many quotes (even wrote them all down on my renewal notice), but didn't actually purchase any insurance purely by accident.
I have never done anything so stupid in my life. As soon as I found out on Friday I got myself insured and will be sorting out my tax on Monday.

Thing is I'm worried about what to do next, I'm sure my new insurer will ask to see proof of my no claims discount, but as I don't have a renewal notice for this year I don't have any. I do have last years notice, but how do I explain why I don't have a notice for this year.

Any advice would be gratefully received. I am really stressed about this situation and I'm 7 mths pregnant, not a good mix!

Thanks

I can really sympathise with you - it's the sort of thing that could happen to a lot of people who really thought they were insured. I have only disdain - anger even - for those who do it deliberately. All you can do is explain and see what they say. The worst that can happen now (assuming that you don't drive until you're insured - and don't for heavens sake!) is that you pay more than you would have done this coming year (balanced against your savings from this year!)
But just think what might have happened and be grateful you found it before you had an accident where you were liable, or were stopped through ANPR and had your car impounded . . . . etc.
    I don't suppose you'll do it again!

Contact your last insurer and ask for proof of NCB as it is valid (usually) for 2 years.

Why are there 2 threads running on this?

Buy your policy online and they won't ask why you were uninsured for a year. Check that they will accept your old NCB document in their terms and conditions and you should be fine.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I have already bought new insurance as soon as I found out the problem, so it may be too late to find out if they will accept my old NCB.
I'm going to see if my old company with give me a NCB letter today and hope that that will be enough for me insurer. If not, I'll have to take it from there I guess.

The proof of NCB should be on the renewal notice - the one you mentioned in your original post with your notes scribbled on.
  • Thanks Mattymoo, I have found in previous years that insurers like a specific letter which states your NCB, rather than just a copy of your renewal notice.

I've got over the first hurdle. I contacted my insurerer from a year ago and they are sending me a letter which states the NCB bonus I am entitled to. They didn't ask any questions as to why.

Hopefully this will be enough for my new insurerer and they won't ask why I haven't had any insurance for a year.

And then hopefully I can forget this whole sorry episode and never, ever allow this to happen again! Thank goodness I hadn't had an accident or anything during that time.
  • You're not alone, OP. I did the same with my house insurance!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!
