I applied to Halifax and was refused!!!!- i have to wait a week now...

1 called up Halifax to arrange a student account, everything was going fine and the guy was filling out the application form over the phone- when it finished he said the computer DECLINED my application- he then said that this kinda thing happens all the time for student accounts who dont have credit and have had no 'working relationship' with halifax before

Have you tried accessing a copy of your credit history through credit agencies?

    Try Equifax: https://www.equifax.co.uk
    and Experian: https://www.experian.co.uk

You can order a copy of your report for £2 from both, and I think they might let you check online too.

Do you shred all your documents before you throw them away? If not, now's probably a good time to start doing so!

Of course, it might just be that since you have no previous credit history, and no account with them they need to double check details.

    HTH!
  • wouldn't worry girl in the halifax told me the computer is knocking back loads of people just now, even when you are trying to up grade your account its saying no said they are working on it
  • doesn't it go on your house and family as well? for example, if you live with your parents and siblings and one of them has CCJs and lots of debt that can go against you even though you have no credit at all.

If someone else's problems are showing on your credit report, you can ask to be dissociated from that person.

  • i phoned up and the man told me quite a few people who have no credit history get refused because of the other people that live at thier address and thier own bad credit! damn parents...
  • i have banked with teh halifax for 9 years since i was 14 and i prevoisly held a student account when i was at man met for two years (i downgraded it to a regular current account when i was off sick) now im returing to full time education to complete my degree i went in to ask for it to be upgraded agin, i have been working for the last couple of months, getting a regular wage and i ahd both my proof of full time student atatus and my student loans compnay letter in hand. i was ushered into an office to call up the people who upgrade accounta and the fella on the other end laughed at me! laughed in my face! he said that i didnt get a regular amoutn of money paid in (i do) and that i had no proof that i was getting a student loan (i do) so halifax can !!!!!! off as far as im concerned! (and i was gonna invest my isa there too!)

so i went off to rbs for the £55 offer and ive now been waiting 2 months for my card and pin number, despite three visits and numerous phone calls, apparently no one wants my money????

    that would be why.
i had loads of problems when i had jsut turned 18, i had no credit which is almost as bad as having bad credit.

I wrote a post some time ago about my daughter's fruitless efforts to get a Halifax student account. She was refused because she has no credit history not because she has a bad credit history.

I think Martin's intro to his student account article is a bit misleading. He says "Banks are desperate to throw cash at students to bring in their custom, hoping they'll stick for life, thus grabbing the best account is very lucrative. As almost all students need to borrow, the key is getting the largest interest free overdraft possible; the new best buy offers £2,750 per year, massively more than we've ever seen before. New students should grab it and existing students should switch to it.

This sounds as though every bank is willing to open you with open arms if you are a student and all you need to do is fill in the form and sit back and wait for your new account to be opened but those of you who I've read about here who have had problems know that isn't so. Perhaps Martin could make it clear that it's not quite so simple to get a student account - particulary from the Halifax. We were very worried that there was some serious reason why my daughter was refused but now know that its fairly common. It took us two visits to the bank and a lot of hassling before they admitted that it was because of her lack of credit history. They admitted there was no bad score against her just no score - certainly not a bank 'desperate' to get students.
  • its catch 22 - nothing to assess

Due to having overdraft you have to have tip-top profile

an existing halifax account run for a few yeard helps as that is a "relationship" with Halifax
  • wasnt ever a student when i was with halifax, actually worked full time for 5 years on a bloomin good wage (that was back then) and when finally sick of my solo card... it took THREE visits with my bank manager and alot of screaming to finally get them to give me a switch card.. and after all that... i promptly dropped them. Halifax's services is disgusting. the only reason they kept bumping me off a card was because of my 'relationship' with them. obviously wasnt in enough debt with them at the time.. well i am now.. maybe i should go back lol
