VIN number differs from log book to car?
Hi all,
Any comments welcome, have been to look at a car this morning (a Peugeot 206cc) and when I asked to compare the VIN numbers from the logbook to the car, there is one digit different (a 4 on the paperwork instead of a U). The MOT's read the same as the logbook, but the car (windscreen and engine bay) had matching digits, just different from the paperwork. Am I right in thinking this is a matter for concern, or do typo's happen at the DVLA?
Thanks in advance....

typo's do happen the dvla rely on the details supplied by dealer when originally registering the car,so if slaes dept make mistake the log book will show the mistake.
i had a BMW that had 1 digit different on log book and mot, when getting mot re-done the tester noticed it.
i had to write to DVLA enclosing the v5 and details of problem.i had the car checked out fully so know it was a typo.
about 3 weeks later i got new v5 with correct details on.
just make 100% sure the car is cosher and the log book can be altered when sending it off to be put in your name so long as all the usual checks on car are ok.0 -
Thanks Johnny, that's a great help. So I probably shouldn't worry so much then! Reckon a HPI check may be in order just in case!0

I'm ex DVLA and typos can happen! Normally it's a similar looking letter/number e.g.B and 8, or 4 and A. But as johnnyroper says the registering dealer may have made a mistake when registering it.
If you owned the vehicle you would just send logbook in to DVLA with error highlighted and correct details written on it, and then get new logbook within 4 weeks.
Obviously it's up to you whether you buy it. HPI check may/may not flag anything up. I'd question as to why no-one (the registered keeper) has noticed the mistake before, but then not everyone checked the logbook.
