Is White Always the Norm for Back of House Painting?

Options
Although we all have different exterior house paint colours on our houses, for some reason people always seem to have the backs of their houses painted white.

I am in the process of having my house painted front and back with the protective house paint so don't want to make a mistake if it is supposed to last me for 10-15 years and although I have had a jolly yellow colour put on the front of the house, on viewing all neighbour's houses at the back they all seem to have them painted white (which I have always gone with myself) but why do we always seem to go for white at the back? I don't know whether to tell my decorating firm to change the yellow they have put on the front to a white on the back as all the neighbouring houses but don't know if they have already ordered the yellow for the back as well. If there is some reason why it is always best to go for white could anyone please tell me? Would it be to attract more sun into the garden (for that better tan) I wonder? Must say, I do like the white as well I suppose.

    I have no idea!!

When we bought our house we got first picks (new estate), they are all cream, white yellow or an odd beige colour..dh was very shocked when they had painted and i immedialty said 'i love the yellow one'! i don't really like yellow anything but for some reason love our house! As it is a new estate they ask that everyone repaints in a certain amount of time and so long as they are kept within the colours we are ok to change (we have a s/o house)..now we have the yellow i fancy it white so i would be interested to see if it is cheaper or not!
  • Ive never come across anywhere where people paint the back of their house a different colour to the rest of the house, perhaps Ive lived a sheltered life lol:rotfl:

Our last house we had totally re rendered and as I hate the boring whitses and magnolias everyone seems to paint their houses I decided to pay substantially more for a colour, a pale terracotta which was twice the price of white, The whole house, front sides and back were painted the same colour and I wouldnt think of painting the back of the house white!

Our current house is 60 year old proper smooth pebble dash, I hate it and as soon as we can save enough cash then Im getting it painted, Im not sure what colour yet though but it wont be white! Of our neighbours who have their houses painted, they are the same colour all the way round, no white on the back wall around here!

My house is white at the front and sides and was white at the back too when we moved in, but because our garden faces north east, I thought the white was too cold, so we painted just the back a warm buttery yellow. It really makes a difference and gives the impression of the sun shining on the back of the house even when it isn't.
