Windows 7 - hidden drive letters

On my pc, I can change drive letters via the normal method of going into computer management. I have used partition magic to try to hide/unhide drive letters. Also gone into registry to tweak mounted devices but so far no luck.

Basically if I assign drive letters D, F, X to any drive - the change happens but file manager it will not show up.

Command line I can go into the assigned drive but explorer is not showing anything if I use any of those drives. I have checked the folder options - drive letter option is set to show drive letters.

Its just those couple of letters which are causing problem. If anyone can help, that would be much appreciated.

If you click into the Explorer pane and hit CTRL+F5 to refresh the display, do the drives appear?

If you type the drive name (e.g. "D:") into the address bar of Windows Explorer, does the directory listing for that drive appear correctly?

If you go to the Tools menu (in Explorer) and select "Disconnect Network Drive...", can you see drives D, F or X reserved for network shares?

    CTRL+F5 does not work.
Typing D: into address bar does work like the command prompt.
No Tools menu (this is windass 7 - useless pile of carp). I use an alternative freeware explorer which too suffers the same problem as the inbuilt windows explorer.

I created a new user and logged as that user and all seemed ok - except then I have problem of having to uninstall/re-install programs which the new user does not have permission to. Grrrrr. This really is P take.

Something in the registry is stuffed - that's my best guess as the new user seemed ok.

Hit ALT-T to see the Tools menu in Windows Explorer.

I reckon it's probably a mapped network drive, which would be specified in a user-specific registry entry. You should be able to un-map the drive to fix the problem.

I had a similar problem a while back, although that was on XP - I presume Windows 7 works in a similar way in this case.

Nope - not networked pc, no fix to this I am afraid other than creating a new user profile.
