unfortunately this is not the case with acer pc/s laptops the shrink partition option is blanked out on the recovery section/d drive

That's what I meant with "quite limited". It doesn't always seem to work as it should. I would have been really surprised if it had worked. Not even Linux can resize mounted partitions or file systems.

So either use the Ubuntu LiveCD or any other 3rd party partitioner. Maybe somebody else has a recommendation.

But as I and others said, don't do it before you made a backup.

If the ACER has the option to make Recovery Discs from the Recovery partition on the D drive, do so before you attempt anything else.

if there is nothing much on the C: then why is it so full? what is takeing up the space. Vista likes to keep restore points, I had a 15GB one which CCLeaner got rid of. Check the downloads folder if she downloads stuff then it might be filling up there.

If you've got data at the end of the drive, eg ntfs system files, it won't work unless you can do a consolidated defrag of ntfs system files with 3rd party software (before windows boots) beforehand , so it is limited compared to 3rd party repartitioning software.

The simple answer to the op's problem is have a cleanup of c, and store some data on the d drive instead of c, if you have to reinstall windows in future, it's safer there anyway.

The OP has obviously problems with it, so it DOESN'T WORK FINE. If it always worked for you then you have been lucky that there was no data in the area you wanted to shrink. One day you will run into the same problem...

The OP already wrote that this option is greyed out on this partition, so it makes no sense to keep recommending this tool. I posted a working solution and there are other (free) 3rd party tools. Google is the OP's friend... ;)

I HAVE BEEN DOING IT SINCE 2006 ON HARD DRIVES WITH 100+GB OF DATA. It works fine. I have done it on many machines from many OEMs, with and without recovery partitions, with and without data on the partitions and both system and non-system partitions.

I must have done it well over 100 times.

In this case, why don't you talk the OP through the steps needed? You seem like the man for the job.

Post something similar in post #6. See which suits best.
