Aquaponics
Anyone got any experience of this? How is it working out?
I finally found some info. on the Web about this - after reading about a well-known Australian blogger (Rhonda Jean) doing this as part of her semi self-sufficient lifestyle and now the Dervaes family in California (Path to Freedom website) are starting to try it out.

I like the idea of something thats dual purpose - ie fish and plants - and also have a sneaking suspicion that Governments should now be publicising that fish is to be regarded as inedible (due to all the contaminants in the Oceans these days) - but haven't dared to do so because they are worrying about food shortages anyway and don't want to make the situation even worse by having people give up eating one of the food sources we have..
Seems to me this might be one way of being able to carry on eating fish - regardless of the state of the World's oceans and depleting fish stocks therein.

I have looked at this myself. I have been growing using hydoponics so this is the logical next step for me as i have kept fish for over 35 years. The one thing that bothers me though is our weather. I came to the conclusion that to do this sucessfully in the uk all year around will require the set up to be undercover and maybe even heated which could be a significant cost.
Of course a seasonal setup that could be packed away over winter is probably a good way to start off and learn about it anyway.
Interesting link on the subject;

The concept is excellent, although I would have trouble eating the fish, being very fond of my tropical fish and being quite upset when any of them die.
I'm a tad concerned that the Aquaponicworld website is selling the Aerogarden system. I came across quite a few reviews about that system a few years ago, complaining about how it was a very overpriced and very overhyped up bit of cheap plastic with feeble pumps that gave up the ghost, which makes me worry about how good the other systems they are selling could be.0 -

I got a bit to close to the Koi in my tank so they are still there !! In fact yesterday I noticed some additional 'creatures' in the tank but they turned out to be fry !! I suppose you will always get people saying negative things about stuff but my mother had an aerogarden last year and she raves on about still it.I owe many thanks to free-easy-money.com !:beer:0
