I have just bought a free view box from comet. i was told that the main difference between the cheapest box and the dearer boxes was that the later would take top up tv. it is printed on the box and in the software on screen. I go to Top up Tv only to find i need to buy a £180 box from them before i can register and use the service. I Phoned up Top up Tv and was told that the system refered to on my free view box was obsolete. When i complained that i had only paid the extra on the strength of being able to use it for top up tv the peson i was speaking to disconected the call saying that it was nothing to do with them. I will be talking to comet, but future buyers beware.

I'd take the box back and get the cheaper one.
If you only bought the box because you thought it would tun with Topup TV, then they should exchange it for you.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I asked about your problem over on the Digital Spy forum and this is what came back :-
"This is due to the changes in the service that TUTV provide - the card system that the box (or any box, regardless of the price) uses is not available to new customers and is being discontinued for old customers shortly. Even the paying customers have had little advance information about this change!
TUTV will be available via an overnight download to a TUTV PVR. And they choose the programmes, not you - you can opt not to have downloads from certain channels, but you can't choose the programming yourself.
The Freeview bit on the box that the original poster bought should work OK though."What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
A second answer has now come in :-
"No the call centre are right. Top Up TV is ending and so they have stopped taking subsriptions.
Top Up TV Anytime is starting - but it's a different service and needs a new box "To enjoy all the benefits" - however they may offer a starter pack seperatly at some point allowing standard Top Up TV boxes to get a service, . I think it's a legal requriment that they make this avaible (it's part of the broadcasting lisence) however it would be prity useless to do so as you won't get a programme guide, and it'll only broadcast for a few hours overnight.
However on the plus side existing Top Up TV boxes are likly to be able to get Setanta and probably another sports channel at some point when they actually close the current service."What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
Have spoken to comet and although it appears they were aware of this. As of this am. the sales staff are still selling these boxes with the tutv service and have not been informed of the changes0
