HP Compaq NX 9010 Laptop BIOS help please

Hello all,

My Niece bought a HP Compaq NX9010 laptop from Cash Converters about 6 months ago.

This week, the machine started re-booting after about 10 mins. It is now in a constant re-boot cycle when you try to boot it up.

There is a blue screen message but it is too quick on screen to see.

I tried to get into the BIOS to stop the auto re-boot so that I could see the error message but there is a password on it, which she has not set.

The shop cannot help and we have no idea what the password is.

The machine is on XP. The only start-up options are F2 for BIOS (which I cant access due to the unknown password) and F12 for a LAN start-up - she is not on a LAN.

XP states that windows failed to load and gives the usual options - safe, safe with network, safe with prompt, last succesful & normal but all of these suffer the blue screen/reboot.

I wanted to be able to get into the BIOS to try a system restore as I suspect that a M/Soft update has caused the issue but I cannot get in.

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions of how I can get in to a restore point or any other advice?

Thanks in advance...

This will be Windows crashing and rebooting.

Its not normally controlled by the BIOS, it'll be a setting in Windows most likely.

BIOS passwords can be reset by removing a jumper (a small connector on the motherboard that links several small pins together). However I don't think its necessary to do this as its a Windows problem not a BIOS problem.

Sounds like Windows is corrupt. Do you have a Windows CD that came with the PC? This should reset the PC to factory settings.

You can't do a system restore from the BIOS so this won't help you. System restores can be done via the Windows safe mode options however you already mentioned you can't load these.

A windows restore CD should do the trick and is the best way forward. Do you have one? or does someone else have one you can borrow?

The good weather isn't always the bringer of good news. I have seen four laptops since last Monday all displaying similar problems and all suffering from overheating problems or the result of overheating i.e. a cooked CPU or graphics card. When you attempt to start the laptop can you hear the fan running?
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

Thanks Simba, will find out about the CD.

HO87 - I can hear it a bit but no more than on my own Dell that is working fine.

Heatsink is blocked. I've had a run on them this week - all exhibit the same characteristics.
