Am I getting charged emergency tax?

Options
One of the guys at work pointed out that a lot of us have the tax code 647L on our pay slips. This is listed on the HMRC website as an emergency tax code.

I read through the conditions and it says I may be getting deducted that amount if I have recently started a new job: I've been serving for 8 years now so this clearly isnt the case.

Can anyone help with this? A tax rebate would be great but don't really know what to do about it as our clerks don't seem to really understand the system.

  • Hello everyone,
I am on 647L for the last 3 years and all so are my friends at work. However, my mum used to on 647L but she just noticed that since April her tax code has changed to K119. Does any oneknow what is this type of tax code??

It is the basic personal allowance tax code so this is the one that the tax office tells you to use as soon as someone enters your employment instead of using BR which is the emergency rate where lots of tax will be deducted 'just in case' so if you are being charged tax at 647L I would think no refund would be issued.

If you read the whole of the paragraph on the HMRC website it also states that this is the normal basic tax code.

Possibly HMRC have screwed up, their new computer system has done a lot of this lately and decided people have another untaxed job !! Has she had a coding notice with this code on, if so it should explain why. The K code means that her untaxed income was £1190 greater than her allowance. Is she receiving a state pension or taxable benefits of around £7660? If not get her to phone her tax office to find out why.

If it was an emergency tax code it would have after it WK1/MTH1 as the tax is worked out on a wk by wk/mth by mth basis on the emergency tax code. If its just 647L its a normal tax code.

I really hope you dont work in payroll / for HMRC if you think that BR is the same as an emergency tax code!!
