Ok - had time to process a bit. Do you think this is better for the cooker wall?

The slide front cupboard on the far right could be normal worktop height if that would look better...

    how about these.

you can swap any or all of the units for cupboard doors rather than drawers and if wanted, on the window wall you could also have tall units like on the cooker wall, rather than base and wall units, so both sides matched

gives you lots of worktop space, but without any loss of storage space

its just balanced cupboards look so much better, than tall there, small here, no wall units, some wall units, etc.

I kind of see where you're coming from on the original design as not massively different to my own kitchen. Although I have to agree with the other posts about it looking messy an unsymetrical. I have the bank of tall units with the oven in the middle and the microwave next to it.

I have the worktop at the front however for a bigger preparation area and we set the cupboards forward of the wall at the back and had the worktop custom made so it is extra deep. I don't agree with the comment about hob and cooker being on opposite sides though as mine are and very definitely not a problem at all. We do a huge amount of cooking both my husband and I and neither of us have an issue with it. Mainly I think because if things are in the oven they tend to be there for at leats half an hour so it's not backwards and forwards between hob and oven as someone else said.

Don't underestimate the storage space of the drawers, It is way more than you will ever get in cupboards! I have virtually an entire kitchen shop in my kitchen. I have at least 13 pans including huge saute pans, stock pans and preserving pan in just 2 drawers! We did find that drawers don't work in a sink unit because of the waste but also because the dishwasher and washing machine connect into there as well.

I love your kitchen becs (Ikea?) - I wish ours was wider... gorgeous floor too!

I am going to have the worktop on the window wall a bit deeper - just can't show it on the Ikea planner. How deep did you go?

I guess the worktop next to oven isn't an issue if there is worktop opposite.

The worktop at the frontis 72cm deep. The floor is chocolate stained bamboo which is through the entire downstairs.
The kitchen looks wider than it is, it is only 8 foot 11 inches. It feels wider because if the doors at the end of the kitchen.

Oooh - bamboo is what I would like but I've been convinced by karndean instead because of the mix of kids&garden. How do you find the bamboo copes with water or things dropped from a height?

I think you only have 5" on us, so that is comforting about the feel of the space.
