Hi, i'm wanting to visit a few university open days but i've been finding that train prices are ridiculous!

The cheapest i can get a one day anytime return to Coventry from Southport is £77.
Im probably going to get a rail card which knocks a third off but thats still £50.82 which is still rather expensive.
I've tried splitting journey's etc. and i can't get any cheaper.

Can anyone help me?

P.s 2 possible Journey dates would be:-
August 4th (WED)
I would need to be in coventry for atleast 12:30-13:00
Then depart from 6pm onwards.
Or August 7th (SAT)
i Would need to be in Coventry for 10-10:20am
Then depart from 4pm onwards..

Thanks in advance.

The Off Peak Return for both those dates is £38.30 or £25.30 with YP Railcard.

With advance ticket on the 4th, the earliest you can get into Coventry is 14.24

    With advance tickets on the 7th;
Southport to Coventry 06.23 arrive 09.24 advance single £10.55 with YP Railcard
Coventry to Southport 16.42 arrive 19.37 advance single £5.60 with YP Railcard
Total Return £16.15 with YP Railcard

    Info from East Coast website

Forgot to add the Off Peak Return on the 4th, the first train you can catch is the 09.24 from Southport arriving Coventry at 12.24 on the 7th it's valid on the majority of trains.

The Off Peak Return will be the same price now and on the day of travel, but the Advance singles can sell out

For the majority of trains then the answer would be yes, but for some odd reason there's 5 trains leaving after 18.49 from Coventry that you can't travel on with an off peak return, don't know why?

I've looked and what's the difference between the £38 and the £25 return?
