Why not use a disposable email address company and create one email address per company/organisation/person you deal with?

Because you need to set it up every time you need a new address. If you have your own domain and set up a catch all on a (sub)domain then it just works.

True, but that's not very much of an effort.

No, No, and No! At least for the one I use.
Emails to whichever of my forwarding emails simply appear in my Inbox. If I get spam from any of them (very rare, usually because the sender's email system has been compromised) I can just turn that email address off, and maybe choose another one if I still wish to deal with that organisation.
It's not free, but I think it's worth the $20-odd a year that it costs.

Ah Ok, that seems a bit easier. but for $20-odd a year I'd rather get a domain and a cheapo hosting package. Easier to setup and manage imo.

That's exactly what I'm doing, but I take it one step further. I use the catchall only on sub domains of my domain. Otherwise you will get much more SPAM as a lot of spammers generate random local parts to send SPAM to it.

To add a website to your list, recently I got SPAM to the email address used at eHow.com. No response to my complaint yet.

Good thinking! I think I'll start doing things that way.

Latest culprit, BigOffers, with an advert for discount electrical goods from one of those dodgy chinese websites where you know you'll never see the goods or your money again.

By the aforementioned dots-in-gmail-addresses, I've deduced that ONE of three companies has likely given away one of my email addresses. One is some obscure foreign games retailer, the second is www.monster.co.uk and the third is dear old Aunt Bessie

    Who bets it's Bessie?

Took a while, but I just got spam from Monster.

Too late I discovered disposable email addresses. However BT spam filters are very good :).

If you are on BT internet you can use disposable email addresses.

You have to manage these from your BTyahoo mail account, but once set up they appear as normal in OE or Thunderbird. If you get spam it's easy to identify and delete the spammed disposable email address.

World record! Dave says something good about BT internet:)

Just got phishing spam to an address assigned solely to http://www.bigpockets.co.uk - One "Reactivate your paypal!" and one "Verified by Visa" email.

Forgot to post a few months ago, but I also got one to an address assigned to PaddyPower. I don't remember any emails saying their databases had been compromised...

I get 5~13 per week at their unique address, the ones I used to get at the unique one from a pink sheet have stopped. I sign up with me @ gmx then change it to unique @ my domain so I am sure where it comes from.

Funny enough when I wrote to abuse at pinksheet and complianceofficer at pinksheet (found on their website) they did not care to reply, so I wrote to the ICO and am still waiting from theirs too , 7 months now:eek: . But fair do's to betfair who didn't even tell their punters that their data was compromised either.
