selling vinyl records

Hi, I hope one of you can help. My dad is clearing out his vinyl records. They are all in mint or near mint condition, and he has asked if they would sell on e-bay. I have checked e-bay and the artists he is getting rid of don't seem to have much interest. They are Al Jolson, Bing Crosby and Dean Martin (to name a few). I am sure they will be worth smething to the right person as they are in such good condition and possibly collectors items. Does anyone know where the best place to sell them would be?
Many thanks Mandy

Where do you live - there is a shop in Birmingham (its closing down at the moment but he is going to work from home and sell over the internet) called Reddingtons Rare Records (owner is called Danny and seems a really nice genuine bloke). He may be able to help you. I dont know him personally but he has been on the local radios chat show a couple of times.
Good luck.0 -
The problem with Reddingtons shop is that they refused to lower their huge mark-up on items in order to compete with on-line stores and so are now closing down which is a shame.0

I live in Nottingham so Birmingham might be a problem as I only have access to a car at weekends and eveningsLife may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance....0

Regrettably, based upon the artists you have mentiond, a dealer in rare vinyl wouldnt be interested and you would be wasting petrol. As you have gleaned from Ebay unless its rare vinyl is virtually unsaleable.
You can check whether there are any scarce ones by looking at what dealers are trying to get for them at:

Nice site, but some of the prices quoted are crazy.Amazombie wrote:You can check whether there are any scarce ones by looking at what dealers are trying to get for them at:

Had a quick look at an Irish band, Scullion, whose stuff is reasonably rare. One dealer is asking $59 for the the Eyelids Into Snow compilation CD, which is currently widely available at normal CD prices (i.e., around a tenner). The vinyl album Scullion, which goes for around £10 to £15 on eBay, has a dealer asking $63 for it.
So I would take these "asking" prices with a pinch of salt. Looking at "completed" auctions on eBay, while a bit more time consuming, will show what people are actually prepared to pay, rather than what sellers would like to get.
The LPs which the original poster mentioned are probably worth around 25p to 50p each, unless there's something really rare in there.

Its a useful site (see also Eil.com) because it gives you a rough idea but they are dealers (pinch of salt) prices and as such more record fayre or bricks and mortar shop prices.
Ebay completed items may not give much of an idea as I suspect many of the albums quoted by the OP wont even sell on Ebay but your values are about right if indeed they are saleable at all.0 -
In the past I've sold vinyl and cds as a bulk purchase on ebay. I've never been stuck without a sale yet, but I rekon if I'd have put them on ebay individually, I probs wouln't have sold any of them lol
So maybe a wholesale ebay auction might be a worth while consideration? Check on ebay first and see what's selling, then you might get a rough idea of your selling chances. Good luck!!0 -
Is there any record collectors fairs near you at weekends, check the local papers, got more chance there than on Ebay as you don't have to take postal costs into consideration.
