Train Prices. :|

Hi, i'm wanting to visit a few university open days but i've been finding that train prices are ridiculous!
The cheapest i can get a one day anytime return to Warwick from Southport is £77.
Im probably going to get a rail card which knocks a third off but thats still £50.82 which is still rather expensive.
I've tried splitting journey's etc. and i can't get any cheaper.
Can anyone help me?
P.s Journey date would be in September.
Thanks in advance.

This would probably be better posted in the public transport board, there are a few people there who are really good at getting the cheap fares.
Look at singles rather than returns. Travel off-peak. Splitting journeys can be time-consuming but can work if you find the right route.0 -

^ It's 12 weeks usually. When the tickets are released is the best time to book.0

I'll post in the other forum aswell in the hope of getting a good price.
My date is just outside the window for national rail.
But i've made some progress saving about £5 using Virgin instead
Thanks For advice0 -
Try a National Express coach instead; get the train from Southport to Lime Street, then walk to the Norton Street coach station and get a coach from there; it's a lot cheaper and really isn't bad; I get the coach ALL the time to London and Scotland.0
