Opinions needed-was this a fair price?

I've had my used car for a year and the MOT was due. The following problems failed the MOT:

front exhaust system has a mounting that doe not fully support exhaust system
service brake efficiency below requirements.

Thanks in advance.

  • What car is it, what size engine and what year and where are you in the country?

  • 140 quid for welding repairs not too bad as welding is always pricey. What I have done in the past is to MOT my car and take the fail sheet to a few different mechanics for quotes. I have an old black cab, last MOT it failed and MOT Garage quoted approx £450, did the above and between two smaller garages ended up with bill for £160!!

I would say a very good price, though i'd be rather concerned that a veh with extensive corrosion had past its MOT 12 months previously.

Did the car have its MOT etc done at the same garage as you bought it at?

I would have said though that the price seems quite a good one - our car often needs stuff doing to it and it comes to more than that!

I'm not sure that spending £260 on a worthless 17 year old rust bucket of a car is sensible. Couldn't you pick up something about 10 years old for that sort of money ?
  • Yes you could, only to find out 12 months later it failed its MOT - costing 500 quid to repair!

I bought the car second hand privately so it wasn't bought from garage.

Actually the engine is pretty good still and it's been reliable. Touch wood, hardly any problems except what had to be done for the MOT. I've known people to get really cheap cars and it costs them a fortune in repairs.

Worthless if you sell it, but of worth to the owner. £260 for 12 months motoring is cheaper than buying a new car.
