i did car boots all of this summer a: to get rid of my junk and b: to get some dosh rolling in. it depends whether you are willing to go back to the carboot again for bits thats you didnt sell first time, decide what you would be willing to pay for the item and stick to it they will always try and haggle you down though, if its early in the day stick to your guns about the price then slowly lower that price untill it sells. i normally average about £40 a carboot and i still have half a garage full to go:rolleyes: good luck angchris

I go to carboots alot - my OH is addicted to them.
My advice is have an idea of what you would pay for something in mind but be prepared for hagglers. As time goes on drop your prices.

  • We did a carboot this afternoon and made £90.14p. Hope to do a 'clearance' one on Sunday to get rid of all the remaining junk.

We always price up our stuff - most people haggle anyway so I usually put on a little bit more just in case. Best sales today were £5.00 for a brand new pair of knee high navy boots (she also bought two pairs of ankle ones for £6.00 I think too). We pile all my little boys clothes in boxes marked with sizes and charge 40p each or 3 for £1.00. Ladies/mens clothes dont sell even though we put them on a rail - got £1.50 for a new mans tshirt today. Books/CD's videos etc £1.00 or less (usually a lot less). Toys go quite well as do toiletries etc.

    Good luck.

Just reread your post - handbags depends on what they are - if they are a good make you might get a couple of pounds (sold a BHS leather one for £2.00 that was nearly new) but sometimes only get 50p.

I usually charge 50p for novels by well known authors like Catherine Cookson and 20p for other books, hardbacks can fetch a pond or more. Cd albums for £1 or £1.50 if by current artists and 20p & 50p for CD singles. Vinyl in sleeves in good condition can be worth anything up to £60. Anyting else you're selling look at Ebay for a guide and charge about 80%. This will keep out the Ebay profiteers and give the genuine customers a bargain and you a good profit to boot.

Presentation is everything. Your bits and pieces will be worth a lot more if it looks like it's been cared for (even if it hasn't). Put all your books together, china must be clean and laid out with larger items at the back and smaller at the front, cutlery should be laid out too. Try to avoid "rummage boxes" unless you have a lot of junk and broken items to shift, in that case put "every item 10p" on a sign above (or in front). Shoes should be laid out on a rug and stuffed with newspaper, it's always worth cleaning or polishing shoes and pressing clothes (put on a rail).

Think of how a quality second-hand shop is laid out...

  • A transparent plastic dust sheet (available from DIY shops and some £1 shops) is useful in case of unexpected showers.
