Portugal (Albufeira) or Tenerife (Los Cristianos)
Looking to have a weeks holiday 30 Aug - 6 Sep this yr as can get cheap flights to either place and booking an apartment through holiday lettings or equivalent. Have never been to Portugal but went to Tenerife when i was 19 for a clubbing hol - so completely different to what i would be hoping for in a family holiday!!!! Anyway I am 27, my husband is 30 and will be taking our 3 yr old. Want nice food, good "nightlife" (ie nice restaurants and evening entertainment in them or family friendly bars) and lots of local attractions. Has anyone been to both - can you recommend one over the other? Was planning on taking £800 spending money so wanting best value from either place. Apreciate anyones advice. Thanks.

We've been to both, we stayed in the Old Town of Albufeira in Portugal which has a lovely beach and the town/square has loads going on in the evening but is family orientated, not so much clubbing but ample restaurants and bars, you need to go to the Strip for clubbing.
Cristianos is the quieter end of Las Americas again not so lively as Las Americas but has lovely beach and the port and loads of nice restaurants, so really its up to you. I preferred Portugal but Im sure you would enjoy both.2008£3002009£13002010£15002011£41952012£21942013£1494

Never been to Tenerife, but the Algarve's beaches are absolutely gorgeous and, even though I am a fussy eater, I always managed to find somewhere nice to eat. I lived in the Algarve for a couple of years and loved it. There were lots of excursions to chose from and a couple of big water parks to try. From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0

If you go to Albufeira I'd definitely stay nearer the old town. I found the strip area quite tacky. It's fine if you like to have British food otherwise Id go to old town it has much more choice.0

Albufeira hands down we went two years running and i would go back tomorrow. Stayed in Los Cris two years ago at Christmas and was not impressed. Old town Albufeira is fab, The Strip was not for us (two kids 14 and 12 ). We stayed in a private apt complex between The Strip and Old Town so we could walk to either. We basically had the pool to ourselves all day, Aqualand is a great day out. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info !0

Thanks for the advice - seems Portugal is the best choice then. We will also be staying in a private owned apt. Only thing that made me think of Tenerife was because everywhere nr Old Town mentions steep hills. My (almost) 3 yr old would refuse to walk and dont fancy carrying myself, her and shopping bags up them! Hopefully it wont be too bad! Would £700-800 be a reasonable amount of spending for 1 week s/c there?0

Hi it is a walk down to old town we would walk down and get taxi back up - just cos we are lazy! If you stay up in between Old Town and Strip there are supermarkets - Pingo Doce and Modelo, the apt complex where we stayed was 5 mins walk to both - again we got a taxi if we had heavy shopping. The complex we stayed is attached link

the apt we had is not shown we had ground floor, the complex is great if you don't need entertainment and want peace and quiet during the day. We booked through Algarve Getaways...0
