in Cutting tax
How do I obtain a UTR ?
I need to register for Self Assessment - I have emailed HMRC at least twice and have been ignored ?
I have a NI number - but no UTR
Any advice ?

Call them up and tell them you want to register as self-employed and you will get one in the post.0
-
So to use SA - Do I have to be self employed ?
At the moment - I am out of work but was employed last year
I owe HMRC taxes for last FY - But they don't appear to want them
I cannot get a response by email or snail mail - and can't speak on the phone either.....0 -
I think you need to have a conversation with them then; if you owe them money they aren't usually backward at coming forward. Why can't you speak on the phone?0

I have a speech problem - I am unable to speak on the phone !!
Also - I wrote to my local tax office over a month ago - nothing heard from them either0 -

Aah - in that case perhaps put a complaint in about the times you have tried to contact them and the lack of response, and ask for the customer complaints procedure....how annoying that they won't respond.
There is an accessibility section on their website; does that help at all?0 -
The accessibility bit - simply takes you to the windows accessibility options - at the bottom of that page is a link to "give us feedback" - that is a load of bulls*** - it does not include a simple email address
The "contact us" button on the top - does anything but
One of the options, it brings up is "All individuals" - which when selected brings up yet another layer of deceit
Contact Us - How ?
I GIVE UP !!
The complaint procedure is a JOKE too - phone or write
Guess what - can't speak and they ignore my letters !!
I have just found a "complain by email" page https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/OSC_Individual?dept-name=&sub-dept-name=&location=49&origin=http://www.hmrc.gov.uk
But cannot make head nor tail of it - it requires a "Helpdesk case reference" and (wait for it) a tax reference to use - I think that HMRC have a big self esteem problem ...
I tried "making up" both references - but this was unacceptible by the system
Grrrrrrrrrr !!0 -
You register for SA here (right hand side if you're not an existing user) :-
https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/login?GAREASONCODE=-1&GARESOURCEID=SaAAll&GAURI=https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/self%2Dassessment/&Reason=-1&APPID=SaAAll&URI=https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/self%2Dassessment/
You keep saying you've emailed them ...... but as they don't operate by email until you're registered - you're not going to get far.
If (your other thread) you owe tax on Savings interest then you simply write to them (your last PAYE office) with the detail. You don't register for SA to do it. And then give it a couple of months as they're permanently in arrears with correspondence. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
You don't need a UTR unless you fulfil the SA criteria.
Also the current timescale for responding to post received is approximately 10 weeks. Your letter of a month ago is probably still sitting in a pile with other letters etc waiting to be worked. They don't acknowledge receipt of post because that then means staff have to be allocated to drafting acknowledgement letters and their time is better spent actually working the post itself.
HMRC don't correspond by email at all. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I frequently correspond with HMRC by email but not about specific taxpayers.
I agree that snail mail can be annoying but there is no alternative except for you to visit a tax office in person and meet a human who will probably be delighted to help.0
