if I told you I knew a garage in John O'Groats that accepted cheques, would it do you any good?
what you need is a copy of the yellow pages/phonebook and to telephone the garages in your vicinity.0 -

That would be perfect, what's the name of it?
Haha I was more looking for big chains. We don't really have local garages around hereOverdraft: PAID

have you thought about transferring money online to someone else who could withdraw the cash for you? That's what my brother did when he needed a replacement card (thanks to my willing mum). Just a thought if you can't be bothered with yellow pages...0

Did your debit card double as a cheque guarantee card?
If so then you are still stuffed as they wouldn't accept the cheque without one. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If you ring some banks, they have a system whereby they can give you a code to enter into an ATM for you to withdraw cash.
Otherwise just go into the bank.
You are giving us the full story OP? or is it a case that you don't have the cash available this minute, but will by the time the cheque comes out of your account.0 -
Try cash. It never fails.
I would if I had any way of getting to my cash...If you ring some banks, they have a system whereby they can give you a code to enter into an ATM for you to withdraw cash.

No that is the full story. Funnily for one of the few times in life I plenty of cash in the account and no way to get to it! I might try ringing them...I've never heard of that.
It is smile so it's an online bank so i can't go in and withdraw cash.
Unfortunately I can't make a transfer as they require authorisation by debit card in card reader...which I can't do without the card. (I think having to authorise by card for every last transaction is pretty ridiculous anyway)penguingirl wrote: »have you thought about transferring money online to someone else who could withdraw the cash for you? I didn't even consider that I wouldn't have a cheque guarantee card.
So generally speaking...don't lose your debit card if you bank with an online bank
After complaining at them a while I *think* they've agreed to let me transfer some cash to another account(of mine) that is already set up...so I can withdraw it from the debit card on that account. I hope that's what they've agreed to do...otherwise I'm definitely stuffed.Overdraft: PAID

I would say that they haven't taken a long time sending you a new card. I would say it has probably gone missing in the post.
Replacement cards are usally sent out very quickly. A virtual bank would normally ensure quick replacement, becuase such a bank is otherwise useless.
Bad choice of bank, in my opinion, by the way. If you used a bricks-and-mortar bank, you could go and get cash over the counter.
Even if you had a guarantee card, I don't think you will find petrol stations that accept chequs at all any more. I do a lot of mileage around the UK and haven't seen a petrol pump that doesn't say 'Cheques not accepted' for a long time now.
I would change your bank.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

They said it was a processing issue and had to reissue a new card?
Yeh, I now realise it was a poor choice, it's my old student account which had a decent overdraft which is why I initially got it. Once Ive paid everything off on it I'l most likely close it.
Hmm...that's why I thought I'd ask because I've not seen one for ages either. Grr...it's frustrating. I'll just have to hope this transfer goes through as I need to leave for pastures new on MondayOverdraft: PAID

I've found that even accounts that require you to verify transactions by debit card will still let you conduct transactions via phone banking without the card. Certainly the Co-op has for me in the past.0
