Done that route many times......last time about a month ago.
Best route round Paris is the east side.....past Charles de Gaulle airport.
The west side route is a right pain.

thanks mervyn thats a great help.is the main of the travel on motorways? can you advise approx how many hours travel involved? we are getting shuttle in the early hours so hopefully the roads should be quieter than during the day.

Check out Via Michelin.com, according to their site, assuming I have the right Clermont Ferrand, it is 443 miles and 432 of those are on motorways, they quote 6-7 hours and about 54 Euros tolls.

Ok Giat is near CF so got the right one. If you click on more options on the home page you can change kms to miles Euros-£s and even chose the type of car/fuel to cost it a bit better. They seem to have 2 recommended routes and a different fastest route, the shortest route avaoids tolls but takes 11+ hours !!

Looks like the A1-A77 one avoids the Boulevard P!riph!rique so might be better, cheaper tolls too.

Came across this today as I was researching my trip south, with an overnight stop at CF:

I was planning to go via Evreux and Chartres but may consider this.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

No you were right first time Clermont-Ferrand. Giat is about 30 miles to the west and just off the A89 (E20). Don't go into C-F itself. As has been said you can check the route on michelin.com

Once past CDG airport just follow the signs for Marne le vallee.

Clermont-Ferrand is home to Michelin's HQ, so I'd hope the map would be spot on!;)
